ROOTSI’S ROAR
by Ben Stillman
Rootsi was the smallest and shyest polar bear cub in the Arctic. While other bears played sports with snowballs and practiced breaking ice with their big paws, Rootsi sat by the water and just listened to the wind blowing over the ocean.
Whoooosh. Whooooooooosh, the wind would whisper.
“Wind, will I ever grow?” Rootsi quietly asked every day, but the wind would not answer.
Instead, Rootsi often heard the roar of Buck, the largest and loudest of the polar bears. Buck had big, broad shoulders and he announced himself with ice-shaking roars.
“Rooooar! Roooooooooar!” he yelled to scare away walruses and wolverines, caribou and muskoxen. The other cubs wished they could be like Buck. They tried to impress him with their own roars. Their yells made it difficult for Rootsi to hear the wind’s words.
One cold day, Buck stumbled upon Rootsi by the water. He towered over Rootsi, looking down at him as Rootsi listened to the wind. The other cubs gathered behind Buck.
“Little one,” Buck said, “why don’t you try and roar like the others?”
