Rootsi tried answering, but his voice was so soft Buck could not hear him.
“My roar is the loudest,” one cub said. “Rooooar!” the bear yelled, but his roar was hardly louder than the sound of Buck’s paw hitting the ice.
“Mine is louder,” another cub said. “Rooooar!” the bear yelled, but his roar was hardly louder than the other bear’s.
Buck patted Rootsi on the shoulder. “Little bear, why don’t you try?”
Rootsi stood up and opened his mouth. He hiccupped twice loudly. “Hiccup! Hiccup!” He was so nervous.
Rootsi filled his lungs with the cold air. His chest puffed out. For a moment, Rootsi felt big like the others. He pretended he was Buck as he blew out the air and attempted his roar.
“Toooot! Tooooooooot!” His roar sounded like a high-pitched flute. The other cubs laughed and laughed. Rootsi was so embarrassed his white face turned pink.
“He sounds like a bird!” one cub said.
“He couldn’t scare a fly with his roar!” another cub said.
Even Buck laughed at Rootsi. “I’ve never heard a roar like that,” Buck said.       Sad, Rootsi lowered his head and walked away from the other bears. They laughed and pointed at him as he went off alone, determined to learn how to roar loudly, just like them.
