CALL: 1-800-4-ALPACA
“Kaw kaw!” called some geese.
“Yeee yeee!” called some owls.
“Wooh wooh!” called some auks.
When the birds settled down across from Rootsi, they looked confused.
“Who are you?” asked a goose. “We’ve come to answer a bird’s call.”
“A bear?” a tiny auk said. “Impossible! Your voice is like ours.”
Rootsi stared at the ground, ashamed that a polar bear, king of the Arctic, could be compared to such a tiny bird.
“I am an awful bear,” Rootsi said sadly. “I cannot roar like the others.”
“Don’t be ashamed,” the owl said.
“But I can’t roar!” Rootsi yelled. Tears streamed down his soft cheeks.
“But you do roar,” answered the goose. “That is your roar and it is nobody else’s.”
“Your voice is beautiful like ours,” the auk said. “Even more beautiful than the prettiest warbler’s song.” The auks gathered around Rootsi, flapping their wings and drying his tears.
“Be proud, little bear,” the owl said. “If you are ever feeling alone and need us you may roar and when we hear it we all will answer your call.”
The birds then flew off in a great flutter. Rootsi wished he could fly off with them. He jumped after them and flapped his arms in the air, but he only landed on his belly and slid down the other side of the slope.
